Ever wondered how to record a msn or yahoo messenger webcam conversation, or a video stream?
You've been having hot video conversations and would like to keep a memory of these? You've wanted to capture a video stream to play it back later?
There are a number of screen-capture software packages which will enable you to record a msn or yahoo messenger webcam with sound, or any webcam or video stream for that matter... Please note, however, that these should be used responsibly, and that you should seek the consent of the person you are recording.
These packages essentially come in two different sorts:
1. Screen recorder software
The first type records any area of the screen, or window, that you specify. This type of software will allow you to record sound, as well as ANY video stream or webcam on your screen. They are by far the most versatile option. Camtasia studio is probably the industry's standard, but it is somewhat pricey...
Here are a couple of examples of such software:

321Soft Screen Video Recorder
An alternative to professional packages. Its versatility and ease of use make it a very good choice.
liteCam
A package with a host of features at a very small price: if you can see it, liteCam will capture it.
2. Messenger webcam recorders (these are good!)
This second type records your msn or yahoo messenger stream directly, with sound. They are probably the easiest to use, but perhaps lack the configurability of the first option. However, the footage is captured directly from the messenger cam stream, which results in higher definition and quality.
Here are two very good webcam recorders, with no loss of quality on the webcam stream:
MSN Recorder Max
MSN Messenger recording software
oRipa Yahoo Webcam Recorder
Yahoo Messenger recording software

Below is an example of the quality you can expect from recording an msn stream with such a package (the jerkiness of the video is essentially due to my slow broadband connection...):
Strapped for cash?
Don't despair yet!
There are several freeware options, though none of them offer the various functions and ease of use that comes with the packages mentionned above...
The best of these I have found to be AutoScreenRecorder 2.0 .
AutoScreenRecorder lets you select a window, or a particular area of the screen you specify manually, and saves the stream you record as an AVI file. The application can be minimized to the system tray, and will run in the background until you activate the recording function with a hot key.
Its main drawback however is that it will not allow you to record sound, thus making it far inferior to the commercial alternatives.
The picture is ok, though the stream you record is inferior in quality to the original webcam stream. Expect a little jerkiness!
In order to record sound, you'll will have to capture it from a separate utility such as MP3myMP3 Recorder.
MP3myMP3 Recorder saves any audio you hear on your computer straight to mp3 or wav format.
However, any sound you capture will then have to be resynchronised with your footage in your video-editing software (Windows Movie Maker, for example, can do this job but it is altogether quite fidlish, and it will take you a lot of trials and errors to get it right).
Finally, if you ever find yourself stranded without a microphone, the video below describes a little trick which will get you out of this fix (MP3myMP3 was used in recording the soundtrack for this video):
